A day like today Luis Aparicio arrived in Cooperstown

On this day, August 12, 1984, the Venezuelan major leaguer Luis Aparicio was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in his sixth year of eligibility after obtaining 341 votes out of a possible 403.

Aparicio was born on April 29, 1934 in Maracaibo, Zulia state.

He debuted in the Major Leagues on April 17, 1956 with the Chicago White Sox uniform, being the seventh Creole to reach the MLB.

On the ball Aparicio resurrected the stealing of bases

Since his arrival in the Big Top he began to dazzle inside the diamond, winning the American League Rookie of the Year award in 1956.

That year, the Zulian hit .266 AVG product of three home runs, six triples, 19 doubles, 142 hits, 56 RBI and 21 stolen bases.

In his 17 seasons in the Major Leagues, he led in stolen bases in nine of them, all of which were consecutive.

Aparicio was crowned World Series champion in 1966 with the Baltimore Orioles. In addition, he was elected to the All-Star Game 13 times and won the Gold Glove nine times.

Luis Aparicio retired with 2,677 hits, 83 home runs, 1,335 runs scored, 506 stolen bases (38th on the all-time list) and a .262 career average.
