World champion Giancarlo Antognoni meets the boys from Giffoni

“To be champions in sport and in life”. This will be the theme that will see the protagonist, Friday 22 July (6.40 pm) in the Sala Blu, Giancarlo Antognoni within the format “Lete brings Sport to Giffoni”, created by Acqua Lete in collaboration with FIGC (Italian Football Federation), FIS (Italian Fencing Federation) and FIJLKAM (Italian Federation of Judo Fight Karate Martial Arts). The world champion with the Italian national team in 1982 and Fiorentina’s flag between the seventies and eighties, will meet girls and boys in the Impact section of the Giffoni Film Festival.

The meeting

Giancarlo Antognoni’s dialogue with the young people of the festival will be a passionate dialogue, a sort of passing of the baton between generations, respecting the values of sport. On the other hand, his entire career has been based on these principles, showing devotion to the purple jersey, to the national team, never denigrating the opponents inside and outside the green rectangle. Midfielder gifted with class and elegance, he made his Serie A debut at the age of 18 in 1972. The day after the journalist Vladimiro Caminiti will define him “the man who plays while looking at the stars”, since he tends to look up during the match. In his football career he experiences happy moments (with the Viola he wins the Italian Cup, the Italian-English League Cup, touches a historic Scudetto in 1981/82) and tragic moments such as the accident during which he risks losing his life after one clash on the pitch with the Genoa goalkeeper, Silvano Martina. An investigation is opened, but Antognoni reveals an incredible sportsmanship, exonerating the goalkeeper. In the 1982 World Cup, Enzo Bearzot carves out a role as director for him. The performance against Brazil will be perfect: his goal of 4-2 for Italy, unjustly canceled by the referee. And it will be Antognoni himself, after a few years, to baptize a very young Roberto Baggio who has just arrived at Fiorentina in Serie A. In 2014, for his 60th birthday, Florence gave him the keys to the city. In 2018 the FIGC included his name in the Italian football Hall of Fame.
