Status: 05.07.2022 10:09 p.m

Big shock for Germany’s EM group opponents Spain: World footballer Alexia Putellas has to pause for a long time because of a cruciate ligament rupture.

This was announced by the Spanish association on Tuesday evening (07/05/2022). The 28-year-old FC Barcelona midfielder injured her left knee during training on Tuesday, and a diagnosis in a London hospital has now provided clarity.

It will be a heavy blow for Spain, who play Germany on July 12 in Brentford, London. Alexia is the central figure in the Spanish team. In January of this year, she was named World Player of the Year 2021 after winning the Champions League, league and cup treble with Barca.

Champions League top scorer

Also this year she won the championship with the club from Catalonia. Olympique Lyon had prevailed in the Champions League final, but with eleven goals they were the top scorer of the premier class season.

Last week she was the first Spaniard to reach 100 caps. The Spanish title candidate will start the European Championship against Finland on Friday in Milton Keynes (6 p.m.).
