Wimbledon: Halep reaches the semi-finals with a clean sheet

Wimbledon

Simona Halep has reached the semifinals at the All England Championships in Wimbledon. The 30-year-old Romanian reinforced her position as one of the favorites in the quarter-finals on Wednesday with a 6-2 6-4 victory in just 63 minutes against the American Amanda Anisimova and has not lost a set in the course of the tournament. The next opponent of the 2019 Wimbledon winner is Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan.

Halep took the serve from Anisimova four times and only got lost shortly before the end when the 20-year-old American was able to reduce the second set from 1: 5 to 4: 5 again. Halep angrily hit his thigh after two game losses – and found his way back to his old sovereignty. “I kept believing in myself,” said the 30-year-old.

The two-time Grand Slam winner (Wimbledon and French Open 2019) has not lost a set in five games this year at Wimbledon. In the round of the top four, Halep now meets Rybakina, who fought back strongly in 4: 6 6: 2 6: 3 against unseeded Ajla Tomljanovic from Australia.

Rybakina revs up after a false start

17th seed Rybakina is in her first career Grand Slam semifinals and also the first Kazakh to finish in the top four at a Major. The 23-year-old gave up the hard-fought first set against the unseeded Tomljanovic, but took control from the second set.

“Maybe I was nervous. I just tried to focus on myself to find my way and then I found it,” explained Rybakina after serving out her 15th ace. The other semi-final is contested by Germany’s Tatjana Maria against world number two Ons Jabeur from Tunisia.
