Van Aert took a time trial with fright

The Belgian Wout van Aert won the Tour de France time trial yesterday afternoon ahead of his teammate Jonas Vingegaard, who thus consolidated the leader’s yellow jersey a day after the triumphal walk through the Champs Elysées. The yellow jersey took a risk in the last time trial, although it didn’t need to, and was on the verge of falling into relegation.

Van Aert thus achieved the third stage victory in this edition of the gala round, the ninth in total, to which is added the green jersey of regularity that he will wear in the capital this Sunday and the honorary title of ” super combative”.

The Belgian led at the Rocamadour finish line by 19 seconds over Vingegaard, who appeared to not contest the final stage to surrender the stage win. Third was the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, 27 seconds behind the winner.

It is the sixth victory of the Jumbo team, which adds to the three of Van Aert the two achieved in the mountains by Vingegaard and the one achieved on Friday in Cahors by the Frenchman Christophe Laporte.

The Dane will be the winner with a margin of 3.34 over Pogacar, winner of the two past editions, and 8.13 against the British Geraint Thomas, winner in 2018 and who will be on the podium in Paris for the third time.

Fourth will be Frenchman David Gaudu, while Colombian Nairo Quintana gave up fifth place to Russian Aleksandr Vlasov, who overtook him in the final time trial.
