Tour de France: the ultradomination of the Jumbo-Visma in five figures

This is not new, the Jumbo has seen life in yellow since the birth of the team, in 2015, on the orange ashes of Rabobank. After the doping scandals of the old formation, the new color had not been chosen at random. The objective was clearly to one day win the Tour de France and the most prestigious of cycling jerseys. The 2022 edition marks the consecration of the Batavian formation. It was presented as essential before the big start in Copenhagen, it became untouchable over the stages, except for the final sprint on the Champs-Élysées.

6 stage wins

Just under one in three stages went to the Batavians (28.6%). Wout Van Aert won three, Jonas Vingegaard two and Christophe Laporte one, the only tricolor contingent. This is by no means a record. In 2009, Mark Cavendish had won six all by himself. But this feat remains to be reported given the difficulty of the route. Especially since they lost two very talented riders on the eve of the third week (Primoz Roglic and Steven Kruijswijk).

12 podiums

This statistic is even more impressive. More than half the time, a Jumbo is mounted on the box. In addition, only six stages have ended without Yellow and Black in the top 10.

3 jerseys

The yellow jersey (Vingegaard), the green (Van Aert), the red polka dots (Vingegaard)… Three of the four distinctive tunics end up in their purse. Pogacar, winner of the last two editions, must be satisfied this time with white, which rewards the best runner under 25 overall. The Slovenian is only 23 years old. And he reminded him on Saturday at the end of the time trial, he is still “hungry” and wants to regain his crown next summer.

42.158 km/h

This Tour has officially become the fastest in history. Saturday evening, after the Rocamadour lap, Jonas Vingegaard was flashed at an average speed of 42.158 km/h since leaving Denmark. The previous record dated back to 2005, and the coronation of Armstrong, which did not fail to raise eyebrows.

Beyond these suspicions, this acceleration is rooted in a multitude of factors. Better equipment, increased professionalization of riders, weather conditions and, of course, race strategies. From this point of view, the Jumbo-Visma is more than responsible for the frenetic pace. She made every effort to place people in the breakaways, and to leave almost no crumbs in the arrivals at the top.

“It doesn’t disconnect anymore, it’s very impressive and it shows on the general average of the Tour de France with attacks very early, very far, commented the director of the race, Christian Prudhomme. We felt for a few years that the so-called transition stages were disappearing. There, it’s even stronger, something happens in all the stages, a first hour run at very high speed, often with favorites and teammates of favorites in the breakaways, a completely new way of racing. »

1er au prize money

The final loot is not yet known precisely, but the classification does not make any wrinkles. More than 2.2 million euros are distributed by the ASO organization during the Tour de France. Much of it will go to the coffers of the already well-endowed Jumbo. After two weeks of racing, the team was already at 111,350 euros. To this we will have to add the 500,000 euros allocated to the yellow jersey and the 25,000 euros offered to the winners of the points classification and the best climber, the new stage victories and all the additional days spent in possession of the distinctive jerseys.

The tradition is that the champions do not touch their share of the cake and share it with the rest of the team and especially the staff. Mechanics, masseurs, drivers, cooks, communication officers… The staff of the Jumbo was particularly provided on this Tour. We could see it on the side of the road during the stages of great heat and the distribution of cans.

… and 3rd in the team classification

Yes, yes, you read correctly. Despite this raid, the Dutch bees did not win the only collective reward of this Tour. An anomaly linked to purely regulatory reasons. This second zone classification is based on the addition of the final times of all the members of a team. In this little game, the density of the Ineos made the difference. The English, with Geraint Thomas (3rd), Adam Yates (10th) and six team members in total in the first 51, won this jersey ahead of Groupama FDJ (+ 37′33) and Jumbo, 3rd (+ 42′44).
