Tiger Woods on the players who chose LIV Golf: “I cannot endorse this choice”

Tiger Woods has spoken. The former world number one spoke Tuesday in St. Andrews at a press conference about LIV golf, the alternative circuit whose birth is creating a stir in the world of golf. The “Tiger” had harsh words for those who chose this circuit.

“The choice of players to go to the LIV, I cannot endorse it. They have turned their backs on what got them where they are. Some even went from the amateur ranks straight to this organization and never really had a chance to play here (at St. Andrews) and see what it’s like to follow the PGA Tour schedule or compete in big events .

Who knows what will happen in the near future with world ranking points and criteria to enter the Majors? The governance will have to look into this. Some of these players may never get the chance to play Majors, that’s a possibility. We’re not quite there yet, that’s for sure, but some may never have the chance to have that experience right here, walking the fairways of Augusta National.

To be honest, I don’t understand that. What’s the point of training only for guaranteed money? What motivates them to go on the course just to earn these sums? You are just paid a lot of money to play a few tournaments (8) and 54 holes, with loud music and different atmospheres. 54 holes is the gateway to the Senior Tour where the guys are a little older and a little more messed up. But when you’re that young, because some are still kids, 72-hole tournaments are the real test.

I don’t see how this change is positive long-term for many of these players, especially if the LIV organization doesn’t get World Ranking points and the Majors don’t change their qualifying criteria. It would be sad if some of these young people never had the opportunity to experience what we are going through, to walk on these sacred grounds and play in these Grand Slam tournaments. »
