For the first time in history, Belgian women’s football teams have qualified for the quarter-finals of the European Football Championship. The Red Flames defeated Italy in their last group match, while competitor Iceland was unable to stunt against France.

The Flames’ victory in a nutshell:

  • key moment: After 50 minutes, a free kick remains in the Italian box. Tine De Caigny reacts briskly and shoots the 0-1 against the ropes without a doubt.
  • Player of the match: The defense duo Biesmans-Kees did not succumb to the Italian pressure in the second half. The 21-year-old Sari Kees is especially impressive at this European Championship.
  • Remarkable: Iceland equalized in the end in the other group match of group D. A draw was therefore not enough to push through for the Belgians.

De Caigny breaks the ban

Many scenarios were possible in the Red Flames’ last group match against Italy. Winning was the easiest and so did our Belgian women.

In a more than decent first half, the Flames were at least the equal of Italy. However, they did not get much further than a few half chances via Elena Dhont and Hannah Eurlings.

Nicky Evrard was on the other side of the field, just like in the two previous games. She returned a shot from Bonansea. Everything was decided in a blood-curdling second half.

Soon after the break it was Tine De Caigny who broke the spell. The great Hoffenheim attacker reacted quickly after the Italians failed to get away with a free kick. Dry in the lower corner and euphoria in the Belgian camp.

Sweden awaits in quarterfinals

Italy was not upset and immediately took control of the game. Girelli first painted the ball on the crossbar and then headed a header wide. The hot positions in front of Evrard’s goal piled up, but the Belgians withstood.

Giacinti came close, but the ball deflected just enough. The central defense duo Kees-Biesmans showed themselves strong and kept a clean sheet.

In injury time, Tessa Wullaert – who played a great match – almost caused a peak. Her bang stranded on the pole.

The final whistle freed the Belgian team. Serneels and his troops complete a milestone and advance to the next round. In it they meet the strong Sweden, the number two in the world.
