The most lucrative contract in the history of the league: Jokic agreed with Denver on a five-year contract

It will start paying from the next season 2023/24, when Jokic will receive $46.6 million according to overseas media. His income will increase every year after that, and in the last season of 2027/28, the Serbian pivot should collect $61.5 million.

Jokic became the thirteenth basketball player in history to win the MVP award twice in a row. Last year, he averaged 27.1 points, 13.8 rebounds and 7.9 assists and became the first player to surpass 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 500 assists in a season.

In the fall, Jokič will present himself in Prague at the European Championship. The reigning vice-champions, the Serbs, will be the opponent of the Czech team in the basic group on September 3. With Denver, Jokic was eliminated this NBA season in the first round of the playoffs against eventual champions Golden State, last year in the second (with Phoenix).

Shortly after the free agent market opened, quarterback Bradley Beal received a similarly lucrative contract. Washington retained their mainstay with a five-year, $251 million contract and will enter their eleventh season together. Beal’s previous one was ended by wrist surgery in February.

Karl-Anthony Towns will get $224 million in Minnesota, with whom he agreed on a four-year contract extension starting in the 2024/25 season. The 26-year-old pivot and first-round pick in the 2015 draft will therefore earn $295 million over the next six years. Phoenix quarterback Devin Booker agreed to a future contract extension under the same conditions. Jessica Holtz, the agent of both players, told ESPN.

2019 No. 2 overall pick Ja Morant has agreed to stay in Phoenix and is guaranteed a five-year, $193 million rookie contract extension. The amount can go up to 231 million under certain conditions, ESPN reported. Olympic champion Zach LaVine, who will earn $215 million over five years, will continue in Chicago.
