Although the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) continues to operate even after the massive Russian invasion of Ukraine that began on February 24, Riga “Dinamo” will no longer participate in it. The question remains open, will such a team still exist at all, and also – where will it play?

Riga “Dinamo”, as we know it in the 21st century, was founded in 2008 so that the team could play in the Open Championship of Russia, or the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).

The team’s budget was almost entirely made up of money from Russia for all 14 seasons, most often the “case” was given by “Gazprom” or one of its subsidiaries.

Following Vladimir Putin’s massive invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Dynamo leaders kept quiet for a while, but finally announced on February 27 that they were withdrawing from all KHL structures. It’s true, even now, when you open the home page of Riga “Dinamo” on the web, the link in the top corner will take you to the KHL page.

Recently, it was unofficially announced that the “Dinamo” formation will not disappear until the end – there is a desire to play in the Latvian championship, or in the “Optibet” hockey league (OHL).

The chairman of the club’s council, former employee of the State Security Committee (VDK), Juris Savickis, confirmed in a telephone conversation with KLIK that they are working to ensure that the club really plays in the OHL in the fall.
