Ostapenko/Kichenoka advance to the semi-finals of the doubles tournament at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships

London, July 5, LETA. The first racket of Latvian women’s tennis, Alona Ostapenko, paired with Ukrainian Lyudmila Kichenoka, entered the semifinals of the doubles competition of the Wimbledon Championship on Tuesday.

Fourth-seeded Ostapenko/Kichenoka defeated Japanese Shuko Aoyama and Taiwanese eighth-seeded Haochin Chan in the quarterfinals 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.

In the third set, with the result 4-5, the duo of Latvia and Ukraine lost one match point.

In the semi-finals, they will meet the second rackets of the competition, Kateržina Sinjakova and Barbora Krejčikova. Both Czech women are four-time “Grand Slam” doubles tournament winners.

Ranking points are not awarded at the Wimbledon Championships.

It has already been announced that in the first round, Ostapenko and Kichenoka beat French tennis players Oceana Doden and Tatjana Maria from Germany 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, and in the second round match with the result 6-2, 7-6 (7:5) beat Arianni Hortono and Demi Schoors from the Netherlands. In the round of 16, they defeated British tennis players Harriet Dart and Heather Watson 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.

Ostapenko and Kichenoka reached the semifinals of the French Open doubles tournament in early June, both reaching this stage for the first time in their careers.

The Wimbledon championship will run until July 10.
