MLB All-Star Game: A home run contest in the event of a tie after nine innings

LOS ANGELES — Pete Alonso was in the visitors’ locker room at Truist Park last week when he was told Brian Snitker wanted to talk to him.

In connection with a new formula for breaking the deadlock after nine innings, the manager of the National, in view of the all-star game, wanted to ask him if he would participate in (another) long-ball contest.

“I said yes,” Alonso said. It would be fun if it was decided like that. »

Three hitters on each side would have three swings each, if there is no winning club after nine innings.

There would be no limit on the number of shots we let pass, and the session would start with a batter from the American.

This formula is found in the 13th item of the agreement that ended the lockout on March 10.

Author of 24 home runs this year, Alonso, of the Mets, won in 2019 and 2021 the home run contest held on the sidelines of the all-star game.

If the match itself were to end like this, there would be a break to make some adjustments on the pitch.

The All-Star Game has needed extra innings 13 times since its debut in 1933.

Most recently, the annual classic was settled in 10 rounds in the 2017 and 2018 editions.
