Martic: “It’s hard to describe how I feel”

At 31 years old, the Croatian player relives a sweet moment in her career. Petra Martic added the second WTA title to her collection imposing her tennis against the young Olga Danilovic at the end of WTA 250 Lausanne. Although she has tried to the end, Olga has not been able to respond to the level of the Croatian. Martic had no problem continuing to score points on his side on the scoreboard, either from the bottom of the court, or going up to the net with the occasional drop shot.

Second WTA title

“I think I played very consistently from the beginning to the end. In the previous matches he cannot do it and I suffered some drops in level, ”explains Martic in statements collected by the official WTA website. “Today I tried to be perfect and not let him get back into the game. It’s hard to describe how I feel. Words fall short.” The Croatian lifted her last title in April 2019 in Istanbul, also on clay. When she arrived in Switzerland, Petra did not expect to end the week winning the trophy.

The experience has been imposed today on the clay of Lausanne

Petra took revenge against Olga from that match they lived at the Australian Open last season, where it was Danilovic who defeated the Croatian. Today, it was Martic who imposed her pace of play for most of the match.

In her speech as the winner, Petra wanted to dedicate some nice words to her rival in the final: “When I arrived in Lausanne on the first day it was the start of the qualifying phase. I stopped by center court and saw Olga in the opening match. She was with my agent and I told her: ‘This girl is going to be a great player.’ And not only is she going to be, I think she already is. She has already won a tournament like this, she has beaten me before. This is just the beginning for Olga.”

Petra reached its highest position in the ranking on January 13, 2020, when it was placed in the fourteenth position. In the next week the Croatian, although far from that mark, will make an important leap from being 85th to number 55 in the WTA ranking.
