Latvian basketball players lose to Finland in the test match

The Latvian women’s basketball team failed in a test match in Helsinki on Sunday.

The team led by Gundar Vētra lost to the Finnish national team with a score of 65:85 (15:26, 20:24, 15:14, 15:21).

Aleksa Gulbe and Vanessa Jas each scored 12 points, but also had four and six fouls, respectively. Ieva Pulvere scored 11 points, had five assists and four steals, while Karline Pilābere scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Sara Bejedi stood out for the home team with 16 points, and Linda Lota Lehtoranta had 14 points.

It has already been reported that the day before Latvian basketball players defeated the Estonian national team led by Kaspars Mājenieks with 84:33.

Since July 25, the Latvian team has held four training sessions, in which 13 basketball players participated.

Due to her injury, Kitty Laks is currently training in a relaxed mode and cannot play yet, but Ilze Jākobsone did not go to Helsinki due to illness. Due to the injury, Anete Šteinberga is currently training individually, while Digna Strautmane is participating in the summer league games in Australia.

Next week, the national team will continue training, but on August 11 and 12, away games with the Japanese national team are scheduled, and on August 19 and 20, Latvia will visit the South Korean national team. Both Asian teams are preparing for the World Cup in September.

In the first round of the 2023 European qualification tournament, the Latvian team defeated the Israeli national team away (62:56) and defeated the Swedish team in Riga (89:70). Latvia will start the second round on November 27 in Riga with Israel, and on February 9 they will play away in Sweden. The winners of the group, as well as the four best of the ten runners-up, will go to the final tournament in June 2023 in Slovenia and Israel.
