Hannover 96 suffered another setback in the final minute of the 2nd Bundesliga. After the last-minute bankruptcy at 1. FC Kaiserslautern on Saturday evening, coach Stefan Leitl’s team only managed to draw 2-2 (1-1) in the entertaining top game against FC St. Pauli despite being in the lead. The visitors equalized in overtime.
Johannes Eggestein, who was born in Hanover, gave the Kiezkicker an early lead (4th), Sebastian Kerk with a dubious hand penalty (33rd) and Derrick Köhn with a long-range shot (71st) turned the game around for Hanover. Jackson Irvine (90+5) scored the late equaliser.
After beating 1. FC Nürnberg 3-2 last week, Hamburg started with plenty of offensive drive. Newcomer Eggestein rewarded the bold Kiezkicker, but the hosts came back. After half an hour, referee Felix Zwayer pointed to the penalty spot, St. Pauli’s Jakov Medic got the ball on his left arm – Kerk converted safely.
After the break, both teams remained dangerous. Hamburg, who moved up to third place, played forward in an intense encounter in front of 33,600 spectators until the end. Hannover was waiting for a counterattack, one of which was completed by Köhn from around 20 meters into the right angle, which is worth seeing. Adam Dzwigala had deflected.
In added time (90+1), the strong Köhn first hit the bar with a free kick before Irvine struck on the other side.
