“Oh, how beautiful that is, oh, how beautiful that is,” booms through the S-Arena. 3,168 spectators celebrate BG Göttingen, which has almost managed to stay in the Bundesliga with an 87:83 win against EWE Baskets Oldenburg.

Göttingen – Only a very unlikely three-way comparison can stand in the way of remaining in the BBL. Cheers, hustle and bustle, cheerfulness, frenetic chants, the mood in the sauna is overflowing.

Festive mood even before the game: On Tuesday, Zach Ensminger celebrated his 23rd birthday, Mathis Mönninghoff played 250 times for the BG, Fedor Zugic played his 100th BBL game. On the other hand, the reunion with ex-Veilchen Geno Crandall, who recently scored 34 points for Oldenburg against Hamburg. But he remains unsuccessful in the first quarter.

The three-point shooters on both sides are particularly in the mood to score. Bodie Hume, Mo Gibson and David DeJulius score for Göttingen, Artur Konontsuk, Len Scchoormann and Alen Pjanic for Oldenburg. So it’s 9:11 before another two falls. It’s the BG’s turn, but they miss several attacks and are too imprecise in their finishing. So it remains a “low-scoring game” (a game with few points), which is 15:18 after the first ten minutes.

Playmaker DeJulius is in constant use (almost 17 minutes in the first half). Most of the attacks come through him, and his breaks are only brief. In the second round, Schoormann scored five points in a row. Deane Williams adds another Oldenburg three-pointer: 19:26. And after three dunks in a row from Ebuka Izundu, the Baskets lead 32:24 before Karlis Silins brings the hosts up to 27:34. The game remains stubborn and sometimes tough.

The BG cannot reduce the deficit significantly in the second half of the second quarter – only Ensminger converts to 35:40 and Mo Gibson nets a three-pointer to make it 38:40. But then Geno Crandall is there, with 4.3 seconds left to make the score 38:42 – his first points. Such an action simply cannot happen!

The BG comes out of the locker room very boldly, very courageously – and scores 48:43 through Zugic’s three. At 52:54, Oldenburg is ahead again, but Zugic is “on fire” and scores a two-pointer. And the lead remained at 58:57 until the end of the third period.

In the last quarter, Iwundi dunked to make it 62:58 for his team. Mönninghoff counters with a three-pointer, Hume puts in an “alley-oop dunk” on a pass from DeJulius to make it 63:62. Another crime thriller is brewing.

And again a crazy atmosphere in the hall. The violets were slightly ahead in the final period thanks to DeJulius’ three-pointer to 71:69 and Silins to 77:73. Tension, drama without end. Like against Chemnitz, the Violets have strong nerves, although Oldenburg equalizes. But Hume has real self-confidence and hits the Baskets with two ice-cold three-pointers to make it 80:77 and 83:79. Ensminger and Gibson hit two free throws each, the fans went wild at 87:81 and could no longer be held back. The victory! And actually staying in the league! Because this three-way comparison does not happen 99.9 percent of the time.

BG coach Foucart: “An incredible victory for us! We played with a lot of energy and intensity again.”

BG managing director Frank Meinertshagen: “That was the most mature and adult performance! We controlled Oldenburg’s playmakers Crandall and Russell.” (Helmut Anschütz/gsd)
