On July 2 and 3, the European Championship in cheerleading took place in Athens, Greece. The RTU cheerleading team went to this competition to represent Latvia.
“RTU cheer is a club that brought cheer sports to Latvia, and it is significant that exactly ten years ago we started something completely new, without even realizing where it would take us. At the beginning, we didn’t even think that it would turn into something so big – it was a handful of enthusiastic people who wanted to do extreme sports and combine acrobatics with lifting people in the air. And now, ten years later, we stepped onto the field in the Olympic stadium and listened to the anthem of the city where modern competitive sports came from. Now there is only one thing left – to go to try their strength on the stage of the world championship,” says Katrīna Kūma, chairwoman of the board of the Latvian Athletics Federation.
“RTUcheer” is the only cheerleading team in Latvia that participates in European competitions in the “Senior Team Coed Elite L5” category.
On July 20, 2021, the International Olympic Committee voted to grant full recognition to track and field sports and the International Track and Field Federation. In Latvia, cheerleading has been an officially recognized sport since 2018.
