Football EM: Netherlands and Sweden in goal frenzy

Defending champions Netherlands and Sweden are in the quarter-finals of the European Football Championship in England. On the last day of the preliminary round, Sweden beat Portugal 5-0 (3-0) in Leigh on Sunday evening and are leaders in Group C. The Dutch women also presented themselves in a rush to score and defeated Switzerland 4-1 in Sheffield (0: 0).

The Swiss team fell 0-1 behind after a header by Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic (49′). However, the lead was short-lived, as Geraldine Reuteler equalized just four minutes later. The Dutch women found their way into the game late, but then showed a strong final sprint.

Romee Leuchter with a brace (84th and 90th + 5) and Victoria Pelova in the 89th minute ensured the clear victory against Switzerland in the end. The “Oranje” team, as second in the group, now has to deal with fellow European Championship favorites France in the quarter-finals.

Romee Leuchter made it 4:1 in the 95th minute. It was her second goal of the game, in the 84th minute she scored to make it 3-1.

Sweden doesn’t give Portugal a chance

The Swedes didn’t give Portugal a chance in the other Group C game. Filippa Angeldal (21st and 45th minutes), Kosovare Asllani with a hand penalty (53rd) and Stina Blackstenius (90+1) scored for Sweden, who won the title in 1984. There was also an own goal by Carole Costa (45 + 7).

This makes the Scandinavians top of their group as they have the better goal difference against the Netherlands. The Swedish team now meets Italy, Belgium or Iceland. The opponent will not be determined until Monday, on the last matchday of Group D.
