It is not entirely clear whether it was really a success. But there is no doubt that it was quite an experience. Ten residents of a care home in Oost-Souburg (Zeeland) were allowed to take a ride in the sidecar of a motorcycle today.

The same goes for 108-year-old Elisabeth Bastiaans, who thought it was a hassle all in all: “Bumping, bumping, what a journey”, she says with a grin on her face. “Sorry sister to disappoint you so much. But I expected more,” she tells Omroep Zeeland.

She continues: “That someone else can enjoy this, fine, but for me this is nothing. No, I’m not going anymore! I’d rather go knitting behind the TV!”

Others enjoyed it all the more, says the activities supervisor of care center de Zoute Viever, especially because many of them also drove past their old house. Amelia Brouwer: “People can reminisce in this way, some used to ride a motorcycle themselves. Then this is super fun. Most came back radiant!”

Then why did Mrs. Bastiaans not come back from her trip smiling? “I’m used to my son-in-law’s Mercedes. It’s not that bumpy at all. I’d rather take a ride with my son-in-law, haha!”
