Canoe World Cup: Olympic champion Funk takes gold – sport

Kayak Olympic champion Ricarda Funk won gold at the home world championships in Augsburg. The defending champion matched the time of the exceptional Australian athlete Jessica Fox with a furious final sprint in the lower part of the ice channel and won with a lead of 1.31 seconds. “In the end I was just in the tunnel, didn’t notice anything. It was super cool, an incredible atmosphere. There’s nothing nicer than winning here in front of family and friends at home,” Funk told Bavarian television.

Most recently at the World Cups, the 30-year-old from KSV Bad Kreuznach was still infected with Corona. Funk, who lives in Augsburg, has now reported back impressively. Canadian world champion Elena Lilik made a mistake in the pole course, but was overjoyed after bronze. “It’s indescribable, I don’t even know what to say, I just want to go to my family and celebrate,” said Lilik, who spent her entire childhood on the ice track and has finally won a medal at a World Cup on her home track.
