Brazilian Judoka Schmidt wins Grand Slam Budapest

Budapest, July 9 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian judoka Guilherme Schimidt today starred in the best performance in Latin America on the second day of the Budapest Grand Slam, winning the 81-kilogram title.

Schimidt, 21, defeated 2018 world champion and Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medalist Azerbaijani Saeid Mollaei in the final.

The South American achieved his second gold medal in Grand Slam stages after the one obtained in the Turkish contest in Antalya, last April.

In addition, Schimidt’s podium is the second for Brazil in the Hungarian fair, after Rafaela Silva’s silver on the first day.

The Brazilian was patient in a balanced final, marked by few actions and a lot of study, so much so that the scoreboard remained unchanged until the end of the four minutes of combat, with only two punishments for each judoka.

In the golden rule, Schmidt looked more for the decisive point against Mollaei, who received his third shido to decide the fight.

In the 63 kg for women, the Venezuelan Anriquelis Barrios, number three in the world ranking, won one of the two bronze medals in the division, beating the Brazilian Ketleyn Quadros by wazari.

The Cuban Carvajal del Toro won the other bronze medal in the category, beating the German Gemma Howell by ippon.

The gold went to the Japanese Megumi Horikawa, who beat the Polish Angelika Szymanska by wazari in the final.

In the women’s 70 kg, the Puerto Rican María Pérez reached one of the bronze medals by beating the Israeli Maya Goshen by ippon, the other scroll of that color was conquered by the Croatian Barbara Matic.

The gold medal of the weight corresponded to the Japanese Saki Niizoe by beating the German Miriam Butkereit by ippon in the final.

In the other division of the day, the 73 kg for men, the scepter was obtained by Azerbaijani Hidayat Heydarov, who beat Georgian Lasha Shavdatuashvili with a wazari in the gold match.

The tan scrolls were held by the Israeli Tohar Butbul and the Azerbaijani Rustam Orujov.
