A Belgian professional footballer earns an average of 266,000 euros, a record never reached

The average gross annual salary increased, that season, by 7% compared to the previous season and reached its highest level. The 266,000 euros include the cost of group insurance for professional footballers.

Professional clubs spent 296 million euros on the salaries of their players for the 2020-2021 season, just under a quarter more than the previous year. Due to the change in the format of the competition, more teams were playing in Division 1B, where the average salary is higher.

The 2020-2021 season was, unsurprisingly, a bad financial year for clubs, mainly due to the absence of the public. Their revenues fell by 22% to 290.7 million euros. They racked up a record loss that season of nearly €140m, a deterioration of €86m.
