Van Gaal: “Have a World Cup selection in mind, but you can still deviate from that”

One of the players he gave a chance against Wales on Tuesday evening was Vincent Janssen. The striker was back on the field with the Dutch national team 1,708 days after his last international match. “He passed his exam”, Van Gaal is complimentary about Janssen, who did not score in De Kuip. “I thought he lived up to what I expected from him.”

According to Van Gaal, he was a good point of contact and with two assists also important for the team. Janssen himself is also satisfied with his performance in Orange. “I think it went well today. I help the team with the two goals. That is important and the coach also indicated that he is looking for that. I try to be a strong point of contact.”

Changed right side

What Van Gaal is less enthusiastic about is the right side of his base team. Halfway through, he also switched Jordan Teze and Hans Hateboer. “When the opponent plays so defensively, we have to switch sides faster. In the first half we only went over Tyrrell Malacia’s side, not the right side. It didn’t function and that’s why I switched…”
