UEFA: Sheriff Tiraspol must find a new stadium to play their European matches

Transnistria’s flagship club, Sheriff Tiraspol, which participated for the first time in its history in the Champions League last season, will have to find a new stadium to play its home matches in the European Cup this season. “In line with decisions previously taken by the UEFA Executive Committee in light of the escalation of the military conflict which culminated in the invasion of Ukrainian territory by the Russian army, the UEFA Executive Committee decided today no matches in UEFA competitions would be played in the Transnistria region until further notice”UEFA said in a statement on Friday.

However, the Sheriff Tiraspol, which plays in the Championship of Moldova, must play the first qualifying round of the Champions League against the Bosnian club Zrinjski Mostar on July 6 and 13, and the return match was initially scheduled in its stadium of the Bolshaya Sportivnaya Arena. “The club have been asked to offer an alternative venue/stadium (which must comply with applicable UEFA regulations) outside the Transnistria region for their home matches […] as long as the ban on playing in the region remains in effect”said the body.
