Tennis: ATP announces far-reaching reforms

In men’s professional tennis there will be significant changes in the tournament schedule in the coming year. The premiums will also be adjusted.

Expansion of participants in the Masters tournaments

A key point is the expansion of five tournaments in the Masters series, the second highest category after the four Grand Slams in Australia, Paris, Wimbledon and New York. As in the past in Indian Wells and Miami in the USA, starting next year there will also be 96 participants in Madrid, Rome and Shanghai instead of the previous 56. To this end, the tournaments, some of which also feature women at the same time, will be extended from eight days to twelve.

In 2025, the Masters tournaments in Canada, where Montréal and Toronto are played alternately, and in Cincinnati are also to be held with larger fields.

Prize money should increase

Prize money at these events is set to increase by 35 percent from 2022 to 2025. In addition, at the end of the year 30 instead of the previous twelve professionals will be able to enjoy bonus payments, and up to 140 professionals will benefit from the new profit distribution, which depends on the economic success of the individual tournaments. The professionals should be informed about this in a transparent manner.

In addition, higher revenues are to be generated through the increased marketing of data. In recent years, players from the back regions have had the Grand-Slam-Tournaments already get more prize money for the first rounds in order to be able to make a better living from tennis.

In the second phase of the reforms, the ATP is striving for even more joint efforts with the women’s professional organization, the world association ITF and the four Grand Slam tournaments.
