Manager Oliver Marmol announced the shocking news before the start of the first match of the doubleheader between the two teams on Tuesday.
In principle, Flaherty was to make a third rehab start on Wednesday with Memphis, the Cardinals’ AAA-level farm club.
Marmol said Flaherty will be limited to around 60 shots.
Flaherty, a right-hander, had platelet plasma injected into his shoulder in early March to combat inflammation. He’s been impressive in his two minor league rehab starts, allowing just one run over seven innings.
The 26-year-old Flaherty is considered the Cardinals’ personnel ace and is 32-24 with a 3.34 ERA.
Last season, he went 9-2 with a 3.22 ERA before a shoulder injury cut short his season.
