Six-time French champion Bordeaux “Girondins” relegated to third league

The Bordeaux club has been in financial difficulties and has failed to meet the requirements of the DNCG.

As early as 1991, the DNCG excluded the Girondins from the top league because the club had accumulated debts of 300 million francs (about 45 million euros). A year later, Bordeaux footballers returned to the top division, which did not leave until this spring.

Gerard Lopez, a Spanish and Luxembourg businessman, became the owner of the club last summer. He previously owned the Lille team, which was also affected by financial problems.

Last year, Lopez took over the Belgian club Mouscron, which left the top division a year later and was liquidated in May this year.
