Shapovalov can’t overcome the ‘Nadal curse’

Ethe canadian Denis Shapovalov added this Wednesday his fifth consecutive loss, all since he beat Rafa Nadal in the second round of the Masters 1000 in Rome, against the American Tommy Paul in the first round of Queen’s (6-4, 2-6 and 6-4).

Paul, who hadn’t won a duel since the beginning of May, won a game that had to be played over two days, since the lack of light forced the match to be suspended this Tuesday before the start of the third set.

A break in the last set was enough for the American to inflict on Shapovalov his fifth loss in a row, all since beating a limping Nadal, thus getting even for what happened in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, when Rafa won in five exciting sets.

And it is that after beating the Spanish, he fell in the quarterfinals of Rome before Casper Ruud and in his debut in Geneva against the Belarusian Ilya Ivashka and at Roland Garros against dans Holger Rune.

The Canadian then accumulates two disappointments on the grass tour, with defeats in Stuttgart and Queen’s, which is a worrying sign ahead of Wimbledon, where last year he reached the semifinals in which he fell with, in the end, champion Novak Djokovic.

Paul, number 35 in the ATP, will face the Swiss in the second round Stan Wawrinkain the first clash between the two since the Swiss won the Masters 1,000 in Pars-Bercy in 2020.
