The women’s soccer team Brazil disclosed the list of 23 summoned for the America Cup which takes place between July 8 and 30 in Colombiaand to which the star and captain Marta will not attend due to injury.
Brazil, the country that treasures the most titles in the tournament, won the last edition and in Colombia it seeks to add the eighth title.
The squad list for both the Copa América and the friendlies with Denmark y Sweden of June 24 and 28 in those two European countries was disclosed today by the Brazilian coach, the Swedish Pia Sundhage.
The big surprise on the list is the absence of Marta Vieira da Silvathe famous forward of the Orlando Pride (USA) 36 years old and six times chosen as the best soccer player in the world by Fifa, who is recovering from a serious left knee injury.
This will be the first official competition in the last decade that Brazil will play without the trio formed by Marta, Ant and the scorer Christians, since the player of Orlando Prime she is injured.
The experienced Formiga announced her retirement last year and Santos’ shirt 10, also 36, was not cited.
Sundhage disclosed a list with 24 summoned but clarified that, as FIFA only allows registration of 23 for the Copa América, midfielder Duda Sampaio (International), will attend the friendlies and will only go to Colombia in case there is a loss.
The preparatory matches are scheduled for June 23 in Copenhagen, where Brazil will face Denmark, and June 28 in Stockholm, when they will visit Sweden.
Brazil, current champion of the Copa América, has won seven of the eight titles played so far.
The main objective of the pupils of Sundhage is to guarantee the only place for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games at stake and one of the three for the 2023 World Cup in New Zealand and Australia that will be offered to the best three of the tournament.
La Canarinha, paired in Group B along with Argentina, Uruguay, Venezuela and Peru, will debut in the Copa América at the Centenario stadium in the city of Armenia on July 9 against Albiceleste
The list of summoned includes three who militate in American clubs and another eight from Europe. The strikers Gio Queiroz from Levante stand out, as well as Gabi Nunes and Geyse from Madrid CFF.
Of those summoned, half play for Brazilian clubs.
Tamires and Gabi Portilho, from Corinthians, in addition to Duda (Flamengo) and Bia Zaneratto (Palmeiras).
Of those called up, only six have played in the Copa América (goalkeepers Leticia Izidoro and Luciana, defenders Rafaelle and Tamires, and attackers Debinha and Bia Zaneratto), which shows the renewal undertaken by Sundhage.
