Added hour before match

The Dutchman was added to the schedule on Tuesday afternoon – an hour before the game – because Danka Kovinic from Montenegro had unsubscribed. Pattinama-Kerkhove lost in the third and final round of the qualifying tournament to American Christina McHale last week. The qualifiers were played at a different park, to save the grass for the main tournament.

Last year, Pattinama-Kerkhove also reached the second round at Wimbledon. She then lost to the Spanish Garbiñe Muguruza.

Gauff trailed 5-4 in the third set, but won three games in a row. After breaking Ruse at 5-5 after a long game, she topped it off with a love game.

Three years ago, Gauff caused a stir by making it to the fourth round at Wimbledon. She is considered an outsider for the title this year.

Fourteenth-seeded Belinda Bencic was eliminated in the opening round. The Swiss Olympic champion lost 6-4 5-7 6-2 to the Chinese Wang Qiang. The game was interrupted in sets on Monday at 1-1.
