Tour of Switzerland: Stage 1

The Tour of Switzerland is ready for a tough edition. The first stage immediately sets the tone: 2760 altimeters have to be conquered on a local course in and around Kusnacht. Paper fodder for the punchers. Can Evenepoel also show at this level that he has gained explosiveness?

Ineos in particular has a strong block at the start: Daniel Martinez, Adem Yates and Geraint Thomas are the banners. Bora-Hansgrohe throws Alexander Vlasov into the fray. Groupama-FDJ is counting on Thibaut Pinot. EF Education – EasyPost has Rigoberto Uran as its leader. Other outsiders include Jakob Fuglsang, Sepp Kuss, Domenico Pozzovivo, Hugh Carthy and Marc Soler. †

- 11 a.m. 49. Punchers to move. Today’s route consists of four local rounds, each with two tough climbs. Probably too heavy for the pure sprinters, but not heavy enough for the classification men to make much of a difference. So we mainly look at the puncher types: Benoit Cosnefroy, Marc Hirschi, Tom Pidcock, Alexander Vlasov, Michael Matthews… There is no shortage of contenders. As Belgians, we are also curious about Remco Evenepoel. After some great performances in the Tour of Norway and Gullegem Koerse, it’s time to see what he can do against a stronger field of participants. †
