French Open – Debate about night session: Iga Swiatek reacts “disappointed and surprised” to statements by Mauresmo

“It’s a little disappointing and surprising because she was also in the WTA,” said the world number one after her semi-final against Jessica Pegula (6: 3, 6: 2). Mauresmo was once the WTA world number one himself and had won both the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2006.

Accordingly, Swiatek reacted incomprehensibly to the statements of the Olympic silver medalist from 2004. From her point of view, it was more pleasant for all players to play in the day session, the Polish explained and defended herself: “Of course I want to entertain and my best tennis in every match show. It makes no difference whether it’s a day or night session.”

Nevertheless, she was disappointed by the statements made by the 42-year-old Frenchwoman. “It’s a matter of taste whether you prefer men’s or women’s tennis, or whether you like to watch both equally. But I think women’s tennis has many advantages,” explained Swiatek, who currently has 33 wins in a row and thus an ancient record by Venus Williams from 2003.

“Some might say it’s unpredictable and women aren’t that consistent. But on the other hand, that can be very appealing and excite more people. So it depends, it’s people’s personal perspective,” explained the French- Open winner of 2020. Swiatek made it through to the semi-finals on Wednesday with a clear 6-3, 6-2 win against Pegula and already scored on Thursday (live on TV on Eurosport and on Eurosport on Joyn!) on the Russian Daria Kasatkina.
