Alex, who ended his career six years ago, denied reports of a heart attack after the operation. “I had a problem a few days ago and the doctors decided to bypass me. I had four clogged arteries,” Alex said in a video released by his former club Santos. “I just left the intensive care unit. I’ll stay in the hospital for another six days.”
During his career, he won league titles in Brazil, England, France and the Netherlands. He won the Copa América national team in 2007.
