Football: Canada’s selection goes on strike and refuses to play a friendly match

Canada and Panama were to meet in a friendly match on the night of Sunday to Monday. An opposition which was to allow the former to refine their preparation for six months before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the second in their history. Only the North Americans preferred to boycott it and use this opportunity to rebel against their Federation.

At the origin of this strike, a quarrel with the leaders of Canada Soccer over the sharing of bonuses paid by FIFA. The players, whose two main figures are Alfonso Davies and Jonathan David, claim 40% while the federation would only give them between 10 and 15%. They also ask for more transparency and better leadership of the selection.

“Canada Soccer has disrespected our team and compromised our efforts to raise our level of play and effectively advance the game in Canada.” “We hope Canada Soccer will take decisive action to work with our team so that we can be back on the pitch for our match on June 9,” the players added, apologizing to Canadian and Panamanian supporters.

They must indeed play two Concacaf Nations League matches. The 9th at home against Curaçao (79th in the FIFA rankings) and the 13th on the lawn of Honduras (82nd).
