El Molinón prepares the new video-markers and the City Council shields itself from real estate speculation

“We maintain a very fluid dialogue with the president and with the board, but I did not know the possibility that he wanted to sell the club.” Ana González, mayor of Gijón, has spoken about the open negotiation between Sporting de Gijón and the Orlegi Group for the change in the shareholding of the rojiblanco club. “It is not a problem of appearance, it is a problem of reality. Sporting is a private club and, therefore, the City Council has neither voice nor vote. What is very important for everyone to understand is that Sporting is from Gijón. That’s what’s important. Sporting is from Gijón and makes Gijón. We will always be in defense of the Gijón team”, stressed the councilor before the possibility that the entity ends up in the hands of Mexican businessmen.

While the City Council and Sporting have been working since February on formulas to address the repurchase of Mareo by the rojiblanco club, Ana González was blunt as to whether the arrival of Orlegi could imply that this group, with one of its business lines dedicated to construction, may have in mind some type of real estate interest in another emblematic scenario, the municipal Gijon. “It is not in our heads to sell El Molinón,” she announced. “There is a situation where the City Council has to look at the relationship with everything that refers to the field and Mareo, and we will look at it if the ownership of the club changes or any of the conditions for which that agreement had been reached,” he explained before to be even more explicit with a possible desire that El Molinón also change hands.

“El Molinón is the Sporting stadium and El Molinón belongs to the Gijón city council, that is clear. And there is a vocation to walk together because Sporting is a very important team for our city. The possibility of a sale of El Molinón has never been discussed. And less because someone related to the construction world is thinking of buying the Sporting or is negotiating the purchase. That does not enter the purchase variable, ”he sentenced.

Orlegi, in Madrid. The development of the Orlegi Group in Mexico has led to its sports betting commitment to the improvement and expansion of facilities. He undertook it in Santos Laguna, both in the stadium and in the sports city, as well as in Atlas, where he is about to open a new sports city. Orlegi also plans to open an office in Madrid as part of the new business line it is finalizing, the so-called Orlegi Sports Global. Under this name, which already has its headquarters established in Bilbao, the Mexican group wants to bring together its investments outside of Mexico. Sporting would be included in them, with whom the negotiation is being held to finalize the purchase process. The process continues, with a meeting in Madrid this week.

El Molinón will release the markers next season

Sporting has begun the installation of the new video scoreboards that will be released next season. One will be located in the center of the upper area of the north end, while for the second the technicians doubt whether to maintain the location of the old one, between the south end and the west grandstand, or opt for the area closest to the roof. The new video scoreboards will be the first of the improvements planned with CVC funds by the club, with the restaurant as the most ambitious project.
