Delas, a valuable complement player who stays at Acunsa

Acunsa Gipuzkoa Basket can now form a quintet after announcing the renewal this Friday of center Mario Delas, who joins Aitor Zubizarreta, Xabi Oroz, Ander Martínez and Xabi Beraza as members of the squad for next season.

The club and the coaching staff have finished very happy with the campaign carried out by the 32-year-old Croatian. As the days have gone by, he has been seen better and better and has found his place as an inside player who creates the game for the rest of his teammates, with skill in continuing the blocks to enter the basket or stop in the medium distance and throw. He has averaged 8.7 points and 6 rebounds in 23 minutes of play, in addition to one assist per game and 57% shooting from two.

Delas, surely due to his experience, is also valued as a player with weight in the locker room and an important piece in the unity that the Acunsa Gipuzkoa Basket players have maintained throughout the season despite the fact that the sports results did not always accompany them. For the first time in his career since 2016 and 2018 he will stay more than one season in the same club (at that time he continued in the Sicilian Orlandina Basket).

However, for 2022/23 it is expected that the 2.07 meter tall Croatian will become a complementary player, since the main objective of the sports management headed by Aitor Uriondo is to sign a physical center who mark territory in the area both in attack and defense, an aspect that did not exist in the team’s game this past year. If that goal is achieved satisfactorily, Lolo Encinas’ rotation will increase a lot in level having a player like Mario Delas coming off the bench.

It is possible that of the rest of the players who have made up the squad for the 2021/22 season, only Mikel Motos will opt for renewal.
