Bàsquet Girona allies with Uni Girona to develop its women’s base

Uni Girona and Bàsquet Girona are united by the women’s base. The Endesa Women’s League club and the LEB Oro club chaired by Marc Gasol presented yesterday the Bàsquet Girona – Uni Laia Palau, the female training base project of the two entities.

The project, which will be directed by the former player of the Girona team Laia Palau, aims to “undertake and reinforce a totally innovative initiative in the world of basketball”, according to the entities in a statement.

The aim of the agreement is to train players in an integral way, just as Basketball Girona has been doing with the men’s teams for eight seasons. With the alliance, the players of the new base will enjoy the tools of the LEB Oro club to develop their sports and training activities. The new women’s teams will be the only ones in the club that will play with the Girona Uni-Laia Palau Basketball shield.

“We were very clear that doing this project was a great option for both clubs, we are happy and grateful to start a project for women’s training”, commented Marc Gasol, president of Bàsquet Girona. “All our players will have the same equalities and methodologies that the boys had”, recalled Cayetano Pérez, president of Uni Girona.

The Catalan club, which will play the final of the play-off of promotion to the Endesa League and that has Marc Gasol as president and player, has a budget of between 1.2 million euros and 1.4 million euros for the 2021-2022 season. This figure represents an increase of 25% compared to the previous year. In case of promotion, the entity will have a budget of three million and four million euros.

The club plays in the Fontajau pavilion, with a capacity for 5,500 spectators, and has the Santa Eugènia-Montfalgars municipal pavilion as a training ground. Currently, the club has 300 children at its base and school, as well as three teams seniora wheelchair basketball team and two 3×3 teams (male and female).

Uni Girona, for its part, had a budget of 830,000 euros for 2021-2022, with the aim of closing the year in the black.
