The sports program of the Fairs and Festivals of San Pedro registers in this edition a long series of absences that have left it very diminished, absences from sporting events with a long history and that previously represented some of the main dishes of the festive activities of the capital. The Iberian Descent of the Duero, the Archery Tournament, the Automobile Slalom or the rugby triangular program, are the main sports activities that will not be held in this edition of the San Pedro Festivities, after the pandemic.
The main absence from the program is the Iberian Descent of the Duero, which has always been one of the main downhill events held in Spain. One of the oldest competitions in the Zamorano and Spanish calendar that has been waiting since 2019 to celebrate its 47th edition because this time, the Zamorano Delegation and the Castilla y León Canoeing Federation have decided to suspend it due to its proximity to the Sanabria Regatta that this year it is celebrated on the second weekend of July. The proximity of both regattas would greatly complicate the organization of the one in Sanabria since at least a week is needed to prepare the natural setting of the Sanabres lake to celebrate it. On the other hand, the Federation is also working on the Spanish Marathon Championship which will also be held in Zamora in August and which represents another great organizational and financial effort.
Another of the great absences in the festive calendar is the Archery Trophy that brought together a large part of the best Spanish archers every year at the Ciudad Deportiva de Zamora. In this case, it will not be possible to organize again after the years of pandemic due to the change in regulations that requires various security issues that the Zamorano Archery Club has not been able to attend to. The reasons for these absences are varied and in the case of the San Pedro Slalom they are due to the delicate state of health of its main organizer, the provincial delegate, Alfonso Cerecinos, a great promoter of the four-wheel sport in Zamora for a long time. decades.
Nor will fans be able to enjoy the triangular rugby event scheduled for these holidays due to the resignation of his position as president of Zamora RC, Carlos Martínez, and of its board of directors.
This weekend
With these absences, the sports program of San Pedro has been greatly reduced, although two of the oldest tournaments remain, such as baseball and tennis. The tennis game was limited to this weekend although it managed to complete eight draws from as many categories, while the ball game has a good squad of Basque players but Zamora’s participation is practically testimonial and the absence of the who, today, is the best player from Zamora, Andres Nuevo, who has just won the Regional del Cuatro y Medio.
