‘Nole’, five-time champion of the tournament, has beaten the Norwegian in his two clashes, one of them in the semifinals of this same tournament, in 2020. The Balkan had a match point with 5-4 to the rest, but needed to go to the tiebreaker and play a great match to get rid of Auger-Aliassime. True to his continued progress after a weak start to the season on clay, with a loss to Alejandro Davidovich in Monte Carlo, Djokovic put in his best performance of the season to end the stubborn resistance of the growing young Canadian.
