Anderlecht will play against the national champion next Sunday. There are traditions that the opponent then forms a guard of honor for the title winners, but that is quite sensitive between Club Brugge and Anderlecht.
When we asked him, Kompany didn’t shy away from the question. “I have not forgotten what our supporters have done for us this season and I will do what is good for the Anderlecht supporters, not what is good for Club Brugge.”
The chance that they say that they should honor Club as champions is minimal, if not non-existent. “If our supporters tell me that they do want a guard of honour, I will go along with it. But if not: move on and we will be competitive on the field. The symbolic aspect of something like this is sometimes overestimated.”
There’s nothing on the line next week but honor. Both teams will not want to let the arch-rival win. “We want to end the season in beauty, for our supporters”, Anderlecht said.
