The management of Russell Westbrook during the regular season has been a constant topic on the Los Angeles side. And will undoubtedly remain so for the one to come since the playmaker should, in all likelihood, return to the Lakers for the 2022/23 financial year.
The former player of Houston and Washington certainly has an optional last year of contract, but how to imagine him making a cross on 47 million dollars?
The proof that the leaders are already anticipating his presence: they have particularly raised the subject with the finalists for the post of coach, which are Kenny Atkinson, Terry Stotts and Darvin Ham. Each candidate was asked about their future management of the 2017 MVP and their ideas for making the best use of it.
Nevertheless, Marc Stein as The Athletic confirm that the franchise has not ruled out a transfer.
The first specifies that the Lakers are reluctant because they do not want to let go of the first draft rounds in the maneuver, when it will take at least that to convince teams to recover Russell Westbrook and his huge last year of contract. But parting with the former Thunder could allow for a fresh start.
The latter argue for their part that only an exchange is envisaged. Thus, a season at John Wall in Houston, where the point guard stays at home, or a breach of contract are not considered “viable options”.
Clearly, either Russell Westbrook is transferred, or he stays to play. It’s up to the new coach to find solutions…
