The best of the Popular Badminton Tournament

During the days of Saturday and Sunday, the eighteenth edition of the Popular Badminton Tournament was held, which since it began in 2003, continues to have the same strength as in previous seasons.

This year it was presented with special concern due to the suspension of the previous two years and with the coronavirus pandemic still to overcome. The response from the players who signed up as well as from the public was exceptional with registration numbers exceeding one hundred participants.

The most prominent figure in the men’s absolute modality was Julián Pancorbo from Burgos who won both in singles and in doubles, demonstrating the tables of this former player. In the final he beat David Serrato, leaving a classic from this competition, Óscar Izquierdo, in third place.

In men’s doubles, Julián together with Carlos Pascual, also from El Burgo de Osma, climbed back on the podium after beating Miguel and Raul Martínez in one of the most intense finals by 16-21, 21-13 and 21-11.

As in the men’s category, Marina Pérez won two wins in both the individual and double feminism modalities together with Pilar La Orden. Both, assiduous to the competition, stepped on the podium as in previous editions.

While in the mixed doubles category, Lidia Andres and Gustavo Barrera defeated the couple formed by Oscar Izquierdo and Lucía Izquierdo, father and daughter, in a match that was decided in the third set. In addition to the absolute category, tests were also developed for the sub17 and sub13.

Regarding the sub17 individual modalities, both Isabel Corchón and Eduardo Hernández won in their respective draws counting their matches by victories in matches that were decided in two sets.

Isabel would become the runner-up, along with Angela Alonso, in the women’s doubles category, with Jimena Ayllón and Lucía Manzanares winning.

The men’s doubles under 17 went to the rackets of Aarón Barrera and Alvaro Gomez, who, being from the under 13 category, prevailed over older players. In the final they beat Marcos Iñigo and Jorge Lopez by two sets to nil.

The under 17 mixed doubles also went to under 17 players, in this case Naroa Alvaro and Daniel Marin.

Finally, in the sub13 individual modalities, Daniel Marin and Jimena Ayllon climbed to the top of the podium again, who had already done so in the doubles modalities.

After the end of the last scheduled final, the trophies were handed out in which the councilor of the Soria City Council Javier Muñoz and Manuel Acero, provincial delegate and head of the organization of the event, were present. Precisely Manuel wanted to publicly thank all the participants in the tournament celebration such as participants, sponsors, public administrations, media and referees, the involvement they had shown for the return of the competition in this complicated environment. He ended by summoning all those present again to a new edition in 2023.
