Hear hear, good people, damsels and damsels. Sunday May 22, 2022, the small village of Château-l’Hermitage (Sarthe) will take a leap back several centuries, to medieval times, to celebrate the 1st edition of a fhistorical being.

The medieval festivaloriginally planned last year, but canceled for health reasons, will therefore indeed take place this year.

A rich medieval history

This meeting is organized by the Country of Art and History (PAH) of the Loir Valley and the commune of Château-l’Hermitage. its mayor, Jean-Luc Loriot goes back to the origin of the event.

We started from the desire to make our town known. The village has a very strong link with the 100 years war and the battle of Pontvallain between du Guesclin and the English, the setting of the town lends itself well to this kind of celebration. If this first edition works, we plan to make it permanent.

Which program ?

Sunday May 22, 2022, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., medieval events will punctuate the day, with many partners and associations.

Two sites will be offered to visitors. Near Saint-Etienne church (XIIe) and the remains of the abbey, a medieval camp will be erected, animated by the Brotherhood of the Quintefeuille.

« On sera en plein XIVe century, withs tents and extras in period clothing, archery, illumination demonstrations by the Mesnie de la Licorne, fencing, tempera painting, using egg yolk and making chainmail,” explains the PAH facilitator. It will also be possible to try your hand at cutting freestone.

Medieval dance, games, horse-drawn carriage rides will also be on offer. In the church, the artist Charlaine Epinal will sound his harp on tunes of the time.

On the street Geoffroy Plantageneta farmers’ market will be held, where it will be possible to buy heirloom vegetables, wool, jewelry, charcuterie, rope made before your eyes…

Near the town hall, the Brotherhood of the 7 castles will ensure a medieval reconstruction. Local associations are also involved in this first medieval festival. Ma vie de château will hold the catering stand and The sons of Castel will dress the volunteers in period outfits.

Guided tour

Throughout the day, it will be possible to learn a little more about the history of Château-l’Hermitage, about its hermitage of the XIe century and the protection of the village by the plantagenet by following a free guided tour (30 min) at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. departing from the town hall with a tour guide.

Of course, it will be possible to have lunch on site under the lime trees that lead to the town hall.

“The objective of this medieval festival is that people have fun and go out,” concludes the mayor. Let the party begin !
