Roland-Garros – The day of the French: Barrère undergoes Isner’s law, Gasquet eliminated, Jacquemot too, Parry confirms

Barrere also beaten by Isner

Quentin Halys, eliminated in the first round, had tried to show his voice. Faced with John Isner, you have to cling to his commitment and hope that the American experiences a slight drop in speed on his own. Grégoire Barrère learned his lesson badly in the first two sets this Wednesday in the 2nd round and his jump in the third was not enough (6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6)

The Alcaraz miracle!

Only once the French managed to take the service of Isner, only twice he got a break point. He himself was pretty good on his commitment (five break points conceded) but against Isner we have to do more and better. His tie-break in the last round where he made too many mistakes is proof of this. Barrere will have regrets.

Gasquet beaten by stronger

Richard Gasquet’s adventure ends there. Despite a good resistance against Sebastian Korda on the Suzanne-Lenglen court, the Frenchman lost his flag in three dry sets in 2h20 of play (7-6, 6-3, 6-4). The American, seeded number 27, seemed relieved on match point, no doubt appeased not to embark on another set. He knows it, he will have a lot to do in the 3rd round: he will challenge the sensation Carlos Alcaraz.

As often in recent years, Gasquet ended up running out of gas. In the game during the first set, using his divine backhand to annoy Korda, he went the distance as much as possible to push the American to the tie-break. But the catastrophic start of this one, accompanied by an avoidable double fault, ended up burying his hope of pilfering the first set. Korda in front, he unrolled without necessarily being systematically sovereign during the second set.

But it is undoubtedly the last set that will leave Gasquet regrets, where Korda will have been clinical when offering a break point at 3-3. Despite break balls obtained in the last game, it was on a fleeing volley that the Biterrois finally left the scene.

Jacquemot takes the door

Scheduled to open at the Philippe-Chatrier, Elsa Jacquemot took time to take the measure of the court and her opponent, Angélique Kerber, who has not been brilliant at Roland-Garros in recent years. Swept away in the first set (6-1 in 36 minutes), the young Frenchwoman (19) finally delivered her match from the start of the second.

The first three games of the second set were hotly contested and if Jacquemot lost her entry first, she was able to find the resources to catch up. From then on, the two players went blow for blow and it was at the tie-break that the decision was made. A decisive game better controlled by the German (7/2) who wins to qualify for the 3rd round of Roland-Garros 2022.

Parry s’enhardit

After the Alcaraz-Ramos marathon, Diane Parry had the heavy task of taking over to end the day on the Simonne-Mathieu court. Challenge taken up brilliantly by the young Frenchwoman who had knocked down the world number 2 and defending champion Barbora Krejcikova in the 1st round. On Tuesday, she showed a lot of authority to defeat Colombian Camila Osorio, 66th player in the world, in two sets (6-3, 6-3) and 1h18 into the game.

Cleverly, Parry focused on passing as many first serves as possible (87%) to protect her face-off. She never panicked, especially not when her opponent broke her at the start of the second set, and finished as a cannonball, winning the last five games. At 19, she will discover for the first time in her career the 3rd round of a Grand Slam tournament. Thanks to her, French tennis is already doing better than last year. She will find Sloane Stephens, finalist in 2018, for a place in the second week.
