Roland-Garros – 1st round – Camilo Ugo Carabelli wins the first super tie break in history against Aslan Karatsev

No more endless marathons at Roland-Garros, make way for the super tie-break. Introduced from this 2022 edition, the new format had been decried a few weeks ago, because it put an end to the fierce fights and improbable scores, but here it is inaugurated.

It was Aslan Karatsev and Argentinian Camilo Ugo Carabelli who were the first to try out the best-of-ten format in the 5th set on Sunday on court 12. This is a first for the entire tournament, because no match of the ladies’ tournament has tried it.

Karatsev, the nightmare match

Unable to decide for 4h17, the two players played their first round on this new format. It was the unknown Ugo Carebelli who pulled out of the game by winning 10 points to 5 (6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(5) ). He will thank the Russian, who plays under a neutral banner, for his numerous unforced errors at the end of the game, as during the whole match.

Unable to complete the match at 5-3 behind his service in this 5th set, Karatsev was punished for his irregularity. His poor 2022 season continues. For Ugo Carabelli, 154th in the world and from qualifying, history has been written.
