Raoul Korner is leaving Medi Bayreuth after six years

Raoul Korner will leave the basketball Bundesliga club Medi Bayreuth. As the club announced on Monday, club officials and Korner decided after “intensive talks” not to extend the Austrian’s expiring contract.

Raoul Korner: “Unforgettable moments” in Bayreuth

“Staying at one location for six years is not commonplace for a coach in modern basketball,” the 48-year-old is quoted as saying on the club’s website. “Accordingly, I really appreciate this time together, which has given us so many unforgettable moments and which I wouldn’t want to miss for anything in the world.” Medi Bayreuth only played its last game of the season on Sunday. Most recently, Korner and his team had to accept 13 defeats in a row.

Korner: Successful with Medi Bayreuth in BBL and internationally

Korner coached the Basketball Löwen Braunschweig until 2016 and then moved to Bayreuth. In 2017 and 2018 he led the Wagnerstadt-based team to the BBL playoffs, where Medi was eliminated in the quarter-finals.

The Austrian was also successful internationally with his Upper Franconian team: In 2018, Korner and his team reached the quarterfinals of the Basketball Champions League. In the FIBA Europe Cup, Medi Bayreuth even reached the last four under his leadership in 2020. A possible title win was thwarted by the end of the season due to the corona pandemic.
