For the first time in 30 years the NFL can have a game of playoffs on a Monday. According to Peter King of NBC Sports, the league is studying the possibility of moving a game from wildcard for Monday nights due to the project that foresees the expansion of playoffs from 12 to 14 teams.

The new format, with 14 teams, will increase the postseason by two matches, which facilitates the change to better fit the schedule. The NFL has not yet decided whether the round of wildcard will have triple rounds on Saturdays and Sundays or will have two matches on Saturday, three on Sunday and one night match on Monday.

In 2014, league commissioner Roger Goodell spoke about the possibility of including games on Fridays. Although he has apparently given up on the idea, Goodell approves of the move to Mondays. “If you play on a Monday we won’t let you play again until next Sunday. These things need to be balanced,” said Goodell.

The change, however, should only take place for the 2021 season, because if it happens next season, the first round of playoffs will coincide with the college football decision. That shouldn’t be a problem in 2021, when the NFL is expected to expand the regular season to 17 games.

The NFL awaits a vote by the players’ association on the new proposals. The vote would take place last Friday, but was postponed due to differences between players and team owners, who are expected to meet again this Thursday.
