David Peterson made it interesting in the fifth inning with an error, but the New York Mets still beat the Atlanta Braves 5-4 in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Tuesday.
The Mets pitcher took a 5-1 lead to the mound in the fifth inning. He attempted to complete the double play, but was unsuccessful after a strike from Ozzie Albies. The next batter made him pay dearly for this blunder as Matt Olson hit a three-run homer to cut the lead to a single run.
Peterson and the next generation of the Mets, however, held on to win. Peterson scored his first win of the season. Edwin Diaz closed the books in the ninth inning with his fifth save of the campaign.
Pete Alonso drove in two runs with two singles. Charlie Morton allowed five runs including four earned in five and two-thirds innings.
