Metapán and San Salvador: A final for history in national basketball

After overcoming their respective semifinal series in different ways, San Salvador and Metapan Finals start today Major League Basketball in the thirteenth edition of the competition.

Both teams will seek not only to lift the trophy of champions, but also to enter the history books of national basketball.

The people from the capital are the current champions, so they are on the verge of obtaining a two-time championship. If they were to achieve it, they would join Santa Tecla as the two teams to win two crowns in a row. In addition, they can reach their third title in history, which would place them together with Brujos de Izalco, as the second highest winners of the contest, behind the tecleños who have four stars.

THE THIRD TIME’S THE CHARM

In his return to the highest category of national basketball, Metapán again seeks to lift the cup after two failed attempts. The first time the jaguars lost a final was in the 2017 Apertura, the best-of-three format was still being played and the izalqueños swept them in two. Then in the 2019 Apertura, those from Santa Ana fell to Santa Tecla in the current best-of-five format 3-1.

If they achieve their first crown in history, they would be the sixth team to win a championship, and they will join Denver FAS, Águila and Halcones de Sonzacate, as the teams with a title.

The series begins this Tuesday at the José Adolfo Pineda National Gymnasium, at 7:30 at night, on Thursday, June 2, it will be played at the Abel Mazariego Sports Center in Metapán. The league eliminated the neutral venue for this season, which was the National Gymnasium from game three of the finals, so the third game returns to the home of San Salvador for being the best classified, this Saturday. If a fourth match is required, it returns to the west of the country on Sunday, and the final game, if necessary, would be on Tuesday, June 7, in the capital.
