It’s no fun (daily newspaper Junge Welt)

The season is coming to an end – there are only two games left in the top leagues. But even when the games are played, not all teams will know in which league they can play next season. The so-called relegation DFL and associations are responsible. As third from last you are not automatically relegated, as third in the table you are not yet promoted because you have to play a first leg and a second leg beforehand.

The same applies if it is to go from the fourth-rate regional league to the third. There, every year, two of the three season winners of the regional leagues North, Northeast and Bavaria have to play out a winner in alternation. There is probably no fan, player or coach who thinks the procedure is great. After all, with the two games after the end of the season, the entire year’s performance can become obsolete. This is not only unfair from a sporting point of view, but can also mean an economic disaster. It is obvious why association officials do not change anything: the longer everything takes, the more television money flows into the coffers, the clubs do not benefit from it.

Nobody who loves football needs these games. And when the CEO of VfB Stuttgart, Alexander Wehrle, says that “relegation can also be fun”, you just don’t want to stop shaking your head. So: Abolish the relegation. Moving up and down according to the table is more honest. Especially since it is incomprehensible from a sporting point of view why the sporting winner of a season of the regional league should not be promoted directly.
